Tenga 3D Male Sex Toy Series Awarded Top Design Award

In another sign that male sex toys are becoming as ‘mainstream’ and accepted as the female variety, the revolutionary Tenga 3D series of masturbators has just won a top design award.

The Red dot awards, which saw among other corporations received it before, Apple, BMW, Dyson and Nikon in 2011, are the biggest of its kind, with a jury of international experts judging products from all over the world.

The TENGA 3D Series are the first ever male pleasure item to be awarded the prestigious “red dot award” proving itself as a product of design excellence…

..TENGA Co. was founded in July 2005 on the concept of “Bringing sexual wellness to the mainstream for everyone to enjoy” releasing the “male pleasure item” brand TENGA; a line of safe, functional, well-designed and above all enjoyable items for male self-pleasure.

The revolutionary products did away with the obscene imagery and lewd products of the past, with pioneering design and technology creating products of functionality never seen before in the industry. The first five TENGA CUPs sold over one million units in their first year, and the entire TENGA line up have now sold over 19 million units in over 40 countries worldwide – making the TENGA brand the best-selling male pleasure item brand in the world.

Salon.com The Male Sex Toy Revolution

Liberal online magazine Salon discusses the male sex toy revolution.  It seems that higher tech sex toys, including Fleshlight and Tenga masturbators imported from Japan, are helping to dispel the image of male sex toys as being cheap and tacky alternatives for men who ‘can’t get laid’.  Whilst vibrators and dildos have long since been almost mainstream products for women, sex toys for men have been something that brought only scorn and ridicule.

There’s also a double standard in the sex toy realm, which is remarkable given that there a much greater barrier to acceptance of the fact that women masturbate, period. Vibrators — which can be used by either sex, it’s worth noting, but are primarily marketed toward women — are solidly in the mainstream. They’re advertised on daytime TV, and sold in drugstores and through “Tupperware parties.” It’s not so with men’s solo toys.

Chuck, 52, tells me that he bought a Fleshlight when his wife was out of town. “After [she] came home, I broached the subject of me getting a sex toy and she said, ‘I know it’s not fair, because I’ve got one, but I don’t want you to.’” He ended up throwing the toy out.

Phil, a 25-year-old virgin who has owned several different sleeves, says, “Our society expects that men should be able to find sexual gratification whenever they want and not have to resort to sex toys. When men can’t find sex partners, they’re considered ‘losers’ by both men and women alike.” As he sees it, women’s sexual experience has benefited far more dramatically from “the sex revolution and several waves of feminism.”

But Glickman argues that the greater acceptance of toys like the Fleshlight has gone hand-in-hand with the rise of female sex toys, which was similarly aided by higher-end design. Progress may be slow, but masculine norms are shifting: As I’ve written about before, straight guys are increasingly opening up to incorporating vibrators into partnered sex and being on the receiving end of anal play. Change is being hatched, one Tenga Egg at a time.

The article makes some good points.  The male sex toy industry is definately growing, and new rivals to the Fleshlight’s crown as the best male sex toy are appearing every other month now.

Being able to buy sex toys online has helped a lot of men who don’t like walking into sex shops.  Sex toy manufacturers have also realised that they can make masturbators that don’t just compete to imitate the female sexual organ, they can actually improve it and provide a genuine alternative rather than a cheap substitution.  Having said that, even ‘pocket pussy’ toys themselves, like the Fleshlight, arguably feel better than real pussies, thanks to the advances in fake flesh technology such as CyberSkin.

There’s also the fact that men are simply wanking a lot more, thanks to all the pornography freely availble on the internet, and wanking is simply more fun with a good masturbator.  This trend will continue to grow as using sex toys with porn becomes interactive, and melds into true virtual sex – something that is already taking place with the amazing RealTouch.
